Initiative Leadership
Five school districts participate in the Preparing to Dream initiative through a $3.54 million grant from Houston Endowment:
Houston ISD | Cypress-Fairbanks ISD | Aldine ISD
Spring Branch ISD | Goose Creek CISD
The National College Access Network and Houston A+ Challenge guide the initiative with national data experts, core team coaches, and on-the-ground facilitation.
A broad coalition of higher education, Pre-K-12 and community and business partners help steer the initiative.
National College Access Network
The mission of the National College Access Network is to improve access to and success in postsecondary education for first-generation, underrepresented and low-income students. The organization does this by actively helping a network of state and local college access programs that provide counseling, advice, and financial assistance; sharing best practices among the network; providing leadership and technical assistance; helping communities create new college access programs, and advocating for public policy in support of the students our programs serve.
Houston A+ Challenge
This independent nonprofit that has been actively supporting public school reform efforts in the Greater Houston area since 1997. Houston A+ Challenge invests in people, rather than programs, by providing teachers, principals and administrators with resources, support and coaching to improve classroom and district practices.
Houston Endowment
Houston Endowment is a private philanthropic organization that improves life for the people of the greater Houston area through its contributions to charitable organizations and educational institutions.
Greater Houston P-16 Council
Established to promote regional adoption of Texas' higher education plan, Closing the Gaps by 2015, this organization promotes success across the education continuum - Pre-Kindergarten through College and Workforce Development - for children and young adults in the Gulf Coast area.
Achieving the Dream
Preparing to Dream is modeled after and feeds into the national Achieving the Dream initiative to promote higher levels of student success in community colleges and universities. Eleven Houston-area community college districts and public universities participate in the Achieving the Dream initiative, through earlier funding provided by Houston Endowment and the Lumina Foundation for Education.
Greater Houston Partnership
Members from the Greater Houston Partnership's Education and Workforce Committee and its affiliate, the Center for Houston's Future, help steer the Preparing to Dream initiative.
